Inmarsat C is a two-way store and forward communication system that transmits messages in data packets in ship-to-shore, shore-to-ship and ship-to-ship directions. The equipment comprises a small omni-directional antenna, compact transceiver (transmitter and receiver), messaging unit and if GMDSS-compliant or with a distress function, a Dedicated Distress Button (DDB) to activate Distress Alerts.
The terminals offer 2-way data, fax, TCP-IP, email & SMS communications to destinations worldwide. They are approved for use under the GMDSS and mandatory for SOLAS-compliant ships operating outside Navtex coverage areas.
Applications include SSAS, LRIT, VMS and position reports to multiple destinations and time zones.
