SHIPOWNER OBLIGATIONS

The shipowner's obligation under the LRIT regulation is to ensure provision of compliant equipment. Ship's equipment should be type approved and conform as a minimum to the performance standards and functional requirements adopted by the IMO.

Responsibility for integrating the ship's equipment into the Data Centre and the wider international LRIT system resides with the Flag. Other than to ensure that their equipment is compliant to the LRIT regulation, shipowners need take no action until instructed to do so by their Flag.

A phased approached to the regulation implementation will allow for compliance not later than the first radio survey after 31 December 2008 or in the case of ships operating in Sea Area A4 not later than the first radio survey after 1 July 2009.
